I GNO for my girlfriends.
Sandy Call has gone to great lengths to help her girls out. She even once showed up unannounced with a U-Haul to help a friend escape her abuser.
After witnessing several friends become victims, Sandy has made a point to become one of the Kanawha Valley’s biggest advocates for eliminating domestic violence. Sandy channels her passion as a lead chair of the largest women-only fundraiser in the region which benefits the YWCA Resolve Family Abuse Program – Girls Night Out.
“Girls Night Out is such an intricate part of my life,” Call shares. “I weave GNO threads in my everyday lifestyle. Domestic violence is an unspoken topic in society. We need to educate and talk about the effects on everyone involved.”
And Call is always getting folks involved. Any woman who has attended GNO can tell you – the food and drinks are incredibly tasty. Sandy is able to corral her colleagues in the food and beverage industries to show up, step up, and serve – all for an incredible purpose. Each company brings their A-game to make sure the women are treated like royalty. Past delicacies have included lamb chop lollipops from the Chop House, watermelon feta bites from Bridge Road Bistro, a cupcake and dessert tower from Lil Bit of Heaven Cupcakes, ceviche from Mi Cocina de Amor and bang-bang shrimp from Mountain Pie.
This year, the theme for Girls Night Out on August 19th at the WV Culture Center is “Be Boho Chic.” Sandy’s team at the Bistro is working on concocting the signature cocktail that all the ladies will get a chance to enjoy: watermelon sangria flowing from actual watermelon.
In addition to coordinating food and beverages, Sandy appears on TV and the radio sharing messages of hope to victims and encouraging everyone to get involved with the fundraiser. When asked why Call would spend so much time on this cause while managing a hugely successful business, she shares, “Being a part of leadership helps me help others. Every day, I wake up and ask myself, ‘What can I do for GNO today?’"
